And on to the quarterfinal

And that is all the positive things I have to say about today’s cup match versus Preussen Magdeburg.
Jarakovic scored the sole goal for FCM in the 49th, but Preussen equalised with 6 minutes left on the clock.
Frank Gerster also put a penalty kick onto the bar before it was goalkeeper Marian Unger’s moment of glory. He saved two penalties and thus secured 1. FC Magdeburg’s win.

Now that was fun!

Yesterday, while Germany celebrated its national holiday (Day of German Unity, read about it here), several of the football associations that are part of the German FA used the opportunity to play their respective cup tournaments.
In Saxony-Anhalt, it is called Lotto-Pokal, and the record winners are 1. FC Magdeburg. As a Regionalliga side they had a bye in Round 1, and the U23 received another bye, on the grounds of having won the cup in the last season. Yesterday, both teams played in the second round, and both won. Naturally I was unable to attend both games, so a friend and I decided t go to Wernigerode to watch the match of FC Magdeburg first team there.
The pitch was one of the smallest I have seen so far. The distance between the touch line and the spectators can’t have been more than two feet and thanks to this the pitch had another peculiarity: both benches were behind one of the goals.
Magdeburg faced a tier VI side, FC Einheit Wernigerode, and so the game was widely expected to be a rather one-sided affair, although some doubt had crept up due to Magdeburg’s series of bad results.
Dirk Heyne fielded an experimental squad, with a freshly fit Ivica Jarakovi? up front together with Matthias von der Weth. Florian Müller got valuable bench time, as did Stephan Neumann and Christopher Kullmann. Nevertheless, Magdeburg dominated the game from the start and took an early lead, only to have it promptly disallowed for offside. Then Wejsfelt scored, with the same result. But when Wejsfelt headed a corner into the goal, it finally stood and Magdeburg were one up. For the remainder of the first half Magdeburg dominated, but were unable to capitalize on their superiority, thanks to some decent reflexes by Einheit’s goalie.
In the second half, this continued and when Magdeburg got a freekick in front of goal, the choice fell on Lindemann to hit it – and hit it he did, firing a low shot past the wall into the corner that was goalkeeper territory. At least it should have been, judging from the position of the wall, yet the goalie was nowehere to be seen.
Eric Agyemang who had been subbed in for von der Weth brought home another goal after some great work by Jarakovi?. All in all, a very fun hundred-mile round trip with a decent result.

Line-up (only the Magdeburg one, I didn’t catch a program so I’m at a loss for the Wernigerode players)
Unger – Wejsfelt (Grundmann), Prest, Otte – Kallnik (Habryka), Müller – Lindemann, Manai, Tornieporth – von der Weth (Agyemang, Jarakovi?

Goals
Wejsfelt 1-0
Lindemann 2-0
Agyemang 3-0

The U23 team beat Tier IV side VfB Sangerhausen with one goal from defender Marcel Probst apparently.
In the next round, 1. FC Magdeburg will not travel very far – the first team will play Magdeburger SV Preußen (last season’s finalists) while the U23 squad will face Germania Halberstadt, who they beat in the semi-final of last season’s competition. Matches are scheduled to be played on October 13 and 14, although at the moment both the first team and the U23 match are assigned the same date – but here’s hoping I can see both.

On an entirely unrelated matter, FC Magdeburg U19 won their first Bundesliga match when they beat Tennis Borussia Berlin on a 4-2 scoreline.

Three in a row

I’m a tad lost for words right now, as Magdeburg have lost their last three matches, largely due to incompetence and lack of power in the attack.

RW Ahlen – FCM 3-1
FCM – BVB II 0-2
Kickers Emden – FCM 1-0

Let’s see what happens in the FSA-Cup next week when FCM travel to Wernigerode on Wednesday, while the U23 play fourth-tier team Sangerhausen at home.

One goal is enough

Again, FC Magdeburg have proven that football isn’t necessarily about scoring goals. In the match against then-league leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf a single goal by Dennis tornieporth was sufficient to secure a 1-0 win. Düsseldorf conceded their first goal of the season, and luckily for Magdeburg they also lost.
Overall the game was an entertaining affair, although that was only in part due to the performance of Fortuna. During the first half it was plain to see how they had achieved their remarkable series of 8 unbeaten games without conceding: Defense, defense, defense. Hardly ever was there any danger in front of Magdeburg’s goal, and if there was, Kallnik (in one of his better games) and Beer (ditto) solved the problem.
On the other hand, Magdeburg didn’t exactly produce a festival of goal opportunities either. This improved in the second half, when Kullmann missed a cross only by a few inches. In the dying minutes of the game, a Düsseldorf player must have been dreaming, anyhow Neumann was easily able to intercept the pass and start a run down the flank. His cross found Dennis Tornieporth standing lonely in the box and he had no problem to score. After that, Düsseldorf did everything to equalize, but Beer and their own inability came back to haunt them, as they fired the ball across the bar or almost had it in goal, only to see Kallnik hoof it off the line.
In the end it was a deserved victory for Magdeburg, as Düsseldorf had done too little to justify even one point.

Lineups
1. FC Magdeburg: Beer – Wejsfelt, Kallnik, Prest – Gerster, Habryka, Neumann, F. Müller, Lindemann (90′ A. Müller) – Kullmann (85′ Agyemang), Tornieporth

Fortuna Düssesldorf: Melka – Palikuca, Heeren, Langeneke, Christ – Anfang, Cebe (69. Hampel), Lambertz (77. Kastrati), Cakir – Hergesell (64. Heidinger), Lawaree

Score summary

Video
The ARD Sportschau has a short video of the match online here.

On Monday, I went to see a 2. Bundesliga match. One of the clubs I have a soft spot for (courtesy of my dad and a friend of mine, I think) played at Erzgebirge Aue: Five time German champions Borussia Mönchengladbach. In an exciting match, Borussia dominated the first half and deservedly went two goals up. Just before halftime, they were given a penalty which German international Oliver Neuville failed to convert, heralding bad things to come.
Gladbach’s fans are used to suffering, especially in away games…what with three away wins in the past three Bundesliga seasons. And in Aue, they were also in for suffering: After the break Aue played much better and Gladbach completely lost control, resulting in a quick equalizer. The 2-2 was offside though, as shown on the stadium’s videoscreen (I’d always thought exactly these situations were the reason you don’t show game scenes on the screen, oh well), but sensationally Gladbach held on and got another goal off a corner. The remaining 24 minutes were sheer terror though, as Gladbach proved unable to defend decently – and with their history, the about 2,000 fans knew the equaliser could come any time. In the end, it was all bliss though and the 600 km round trip had not been in vain. Now I’ve seen two away matches involving Gladbach, and they’ve won one of them, a ratio many a fan would envy. 😉

What a weekend…

Our first team lost 1-2 at Oberhausen, with an own goal by our keeper helping Oberhausen.

Our reserve lost 0-1 against Grün-Weiß Wolfen who had been deducted 3 points for subbing in a non-eligible player on the first matchday of the season. When everyone was just coming to terms with the nil-all draw, the referee blew for a blatant penalty, after a Wolfen player had fallen down in the box. He had collided with a Magdeburg player, there was no foul play. Anyway, Wolfen converted the penalty, so Magdeburg’s U23 (as that’s what the reserve is nowadays) dropped down to second place.
At the end of the season, all the first-placed team will be promoted to the Oberliga, the second-placed team will face the vice-champion of Berlin’s 5th tier in a play-off. All other teams stay in the Verbandsliga, but the league will drop to tier 6, due to the league reform.

To make the day of defeat complete, our third team lost as well…
The U19 and U17 teams did not play, due to other competitions taking precedent.

Here’s hoping that the first team’s match against unbeaten league leaders Düsseldorf will be as successful as the Lübeck match.

Goal, Goaaal, Goaaaaaal!

Finally, a somewhat convincing game by FC Magdeburg. After weeks of dietary products, quality-wise, Magdeburg were able to beat and outclass VfB Lübeck yesterday. Still no goals by our forwards, but as long as Björn Lindemann can compensate, that doesn’t really matter.

The first half of the game was similar to the Cottbus and Dresden matches, with the notable difference that this time the club had more opportunities to take the lead. And just 120 seconds after Lindemann had only hit the post, he scored off a deflected Kullmann pass from the goal line. A wonderful lob into the right top corner left Lübeck’s goalie short of ways to prevent the goal.
Shortly before halftime, Prest had the opportunity to make it 2-0, but he showed his defensive abilities by only putting the ball low outside the far post. Exactly after 45 minutes the ref signalled for the break, prompting an outburst of anger from Kullmann, as Magdeburg had just gotten another attack on the way. The referee awarded him a yellow card for that…

After the break, Lübeck tried to push for the equaliser and Magdeburg’s defense offered them some opportunities, but nothing could be gained from that. In the 57th, Kullmann had another opportunity, but Lübeck’s defender Hirsch scratched the boal off the line. In the ensuing corner, Gerster crossed the ball precisely onto Christian Prest whose header was unstoppable and brought the 2-0, just when Lübeck had seemed to be gaining onto Magdeburg.
In the 70th, new Magdeburg player Ivica Jaraković was subbed in, and while he didn’t have any decisive actions, it was plain to see that he is a good buy, he has vision, technique and just knows where to be, just like a forward ought to. After his substitution, Lindemann headed a Wejsfelt freekick towards the goal, and when Tornieporth got hold of the deflected ball, Lindemann was still standing alone in front of goal and had no problems scoring his 5th goal of the season, making him FCM’s top goalgetter and 2nd in the league.
Magdeburg with a deserved win against a weak Lübeck, for whom it was the second 0-3 defeat within 5 days.

Lineups:
1. FC Magdeburg: Beer – Wejsfelt, Kallnik, Prest – Neumann, Gerster, Lindemann (88. Agyemang), Habryka, F. Müller – Kullmann (70′ Jarakovic), von der Weth (79′ Tornieporth)

VfB Lübeck: Rott – Hirsch, Tuerkmen, Müller – Rump, Joof, Hoffmann, Imaya (46. Markow), Caruso (55. Noutsos) – Karadas (58. Laumann), Heun

Score summary:
34′ Lindemann 1-0
58′ Prest            2-0
85′ Lindemann 3-0

Where have you gone, Dynamo Dresden?

To answer my own question – home without points and goal.
Like in March, 1. FC Magdeburg won 1-0 against Dynamo. This time around, Lindemann scored from a 30-yd free kick.
The rest of the game was horrible as ever, zero improvement over the Cottbus match in the week before.

Facts:
4′ Lindemann 1-0

Attendance: 16,527

In other news, our U19 lost their first Bundesliga match 0-4 in Wolfsburg, while our reserves (now officially a U23 team) won their away game at Staßfurt 1-0.
