In wenigen Tagen beginnt der 1. FC Magdeburg mit der Vorbereitung auf die zweite Saisonhälfte in der Regionalliga Nordost. Da ich mich in letzter Zeit ja etwas ausgeschwiegen habe zu den Leistungen der Mannschaft und vor allem zu den „Leistungen“ des Trainers, nutze ich die Gelegenheit, einmal Bilanz zu ziehen und die ersten 6 Monate der Saison noch einmal Paroli laufen zu lassen, wie der Sportfreund Hrubesch zu sagen pflegt. Nun sind bereits sechs Spieltage in der Regionalliga und zwei im Landespokal ins Land gegangen, und ein Blick auf die Tabelle lässt erschauern. Leider aber nicht mit einem wohligwarmen Gefühl, sondern eher mit Gänsehaut an allen Körperteilen. Der Club liegt mit 6 Punkten aus 6 Spielen auf Platz 13 der Tabelle und hat die geradezu fantastisch niedrige Zahl von 4 Toren erzielt.
Am gestrigen Sonntag holte die Mannschaft einen Punkt beim bisherigen Tabellenführer Leipzig, wobei ich nicht anwesend war, dass Spiel also nicht beurteilen kann. Aber wenn ein Trainer sich am sechsten Spieltag in der Pressekonferenz hinsetzt und auf die Nachfrage, ob denn das 4-4-2 (Wolf spielte als hängende Spitze und der FCM somit zum ersten Mal mit zwei Spitzen) auch eine Möglichkeit fürs nächste Heimspiel wäre, antwortet: Krieger hat es natürlich leichter, wenn er Unterstützung hat, und das könnte auch eine Möglichkeit fürs nächste Heimspiel sein, dann kann man nur noch mit dem Kopf schütteln und feststellen: Ja, ach?
Wenn man das taktische System bis zum Spiel gegen Leipzig analysiert, wird man feststellen, dass es keins ist. Der Club spielt nur mit einer Spitze. Das ist aber gar nicht das Problem. Das Problem ist, dass er nur nominell mit einer Spitze spielt, die auch noch eine hängende Spitze verkörpert. Die zentralen Mittelfeldspieler, die Krieger den Ball zuspielen sollen, machen das zwar – aber eben schon dreißig, vierzig Meter vor dem Tor. So steht dann die einzige Spitze mit dem Rücken zum Tor – aber eben völlig außerhalb der Zone, in der man mit einer schnellen Drehung und einem Schuss Gefahr erzeugen kann.
Kombiniert man das mit dem absolut mangelhaften Spiel über die Außen, müsste eigentlich für jeden erkennbar sein, dass wir gar keine Torgefahr erzeugen können, selbst wenn wir es wollten!1
Eine Einzelkritik der Spieler erübrigt sich fast, so lange wir in diesem so genannten 4-1-4-1 agieren, das aber bestenfalls ein 4-6-0 ist.
Gegen Meuselwitz wie gegen RB war Torhüter Tischer der beste Mann auf dem Platz. An beiden Gegentoren unschuldig, rettete er den Punkt gegen Leipzig und hielt die Mannschaft gegen Meuselwitz zumindest im Spiel. Apropos erkennen: Mittlerweile scheint sich auch im Trainerstab die Erkenntnis durchzusetzen, dass Kosta Rodrigues nicht mehr für Regionalliga-Fußball taugt. Sowohl gegen Meuselwitz als auch gegen Cottbus machte er hauptsächlich mit schlechten Aktionen auf sich aufmerksam, verschuldete gegen Cottbus sogar das Gegentor. Offenbar ist also doch eine gewisse Erkenntnisfähigkeit vorhanden.
Ein konsequentes Wechseln auf ein 4-4-2, dass dann auch mit Leben erfüllt wird, könnte noch einiges zum Guten wenden, aber das muss man sich natürlich auch zutrauen, sowohl von Seiten des Trainers als auch von Seiten der Mannschaft. Die Mannschaft scheint im übrigen hinter Wolfgang Sandhowe zu stehen, zumindest wird Verteidiger Friebertshäuser, trotz regelmäßiger Böcke zum Abwehrchef befördert, mit den Worten „Diese Leistung war ein klares Signal der Mannschaft. Wir wollen damit zeigen, dass Trainer Sandhowe und wir zusammengehören.“ zitiert. Nunja…
Am nächsten Wochenende spielt der FCM gegen Holstein Kiel, die nach ihrem 4-1-Sieg im Derby gegen den VfB Lübeck sicher motivierter auftreten werden als in der vergangenen Saison. Da wird sich dann zeigen, ob das Meuselwitz- oder das Leipzigspiel den Leistungsstand der Magdeburger Mannschaft widerspiegelte.
Edit: Huch, da hab ich doch glatt das Ergebnis von Kiel-Lübeck falschrum im Kopf gehabt.

But you wouldn’t know that from reading FCM-related boards. Two draws from the first two matches of the new Regionalliga Nord season were enough to trigger the „this season’s over, we’ll never get promoted this way, sack the manager“ gene in a lot of people.
Looking at it a tad more rationally, nothing’s lost yet — obviously.
In Lübeck, Magdeburg took the lead with 15 minutes to go, despite being a man down, but 7 minutes before the final whistle, Lübeck equalised with a 45-yard screamer. No way any goalie would have saved that one. Hence, despite playing badly for most of the 90 minutes yet still dominating the match in terms of shots on goal, Magdeburg came away with just one point. That is exactly one more point than the team won in Lübeck in the past season, but two points less than the team had after the first matchday in the last season.
Last Friday then saw the home debut of the reformed team against the reserve team of Bundesliga side Hamburger SV. The first half, admittedly, was abysmal. Three major and one possible minor issue prevented a better performance.
First and foremost, there were only ten players in the pitch for most of the time, because Catalin Racanel was mentally absent for large parts of the first 45. Secondly, Baumgart had started with a so-called double-six, that is, two defensive midfielders, both of which stood too deep, creating a huge hole in central midfield. Which brings us to issue number three: Tüting who was supposed to play behind the only true forward Vujanovic, moved to a parallel position with him too quickly when Magdeburg gained possession, robbing his teammates of a pass option, so that the only way was to play using the wingers Watzka and Racanel…well, Watzka. This could have worked but for the minor issue I mentioned above, namely the wingbacks not moving forward quickly enough. Hence Watzka would have to face to opposing players on his own, a venture that could not possibly have any successful outcome.
For the second half, manager Baumgart took off Racanel and replaced him with a second forward, Siga. This meant that Tüting left the central position and moved to the left flank, with the team now playing a 4-2-2-2. The change – and most likely a very harsh appeal to the players – led to a dominant performance in the second half with Magdeburg generating scoring chance after scoring chance, Siga missing the most obvious when he kicked the ball past the goal from about four yards. In the end, Magdeburg were unlucky to draw as Hamburg had a mere two true opportunities, both of which were foiled by Magdeburg goalie Tischer.
Naturally, the level of contentness is limited, but especially the second half provided a glimpse of hope for the remaining season.
In other news, Denis Wolf will be out for another 6 weeks after undergoing knee surgery for a ligament issue. Magdeburg’s sporting director Michael Richter has declared the club will sign another forward.

Not only is the season at its end, but also the time 1. FC Magdeburg spends in tier III of German football. Thanks to yet another league reform the 11th place is not enough to stay up, and Magdeburg will have to play in the then-tier IV Regionalliga Nord come next season.
How could a club that finished 3rd last season play this badly, you ask? As usual the answer to that question is rather complex. One factor, and basically speaking the factor that led to this miserable result is the 3rd place from the last season. A lot of people assumed that the team achieved this rank because of its inherent qualities, and unfortunately, members of the Magdeburg board and at least in part the manager were among those people. This has led to only very inadequate players coming in, such as Eric Agyemang and Dennis Tornieporth, both of which were unable to fulfill the expectations. Also, the club was not able to compensate for the loss of forward Aleksandar Kotuljac who went to Greuter Fürth (and has established himself rather well in the 2nd Bundesliga) and even Sven Kubis was missed by some. These two issues, the overconfidence in the strength of the team and the fact that as a consequence no new players that could increase that quality (an exception is, of course, Florian Müller who had a brilliant season) were signed are the origin of all problems that the club has had in this season.
From these issues arose another. Manager Dirk Heyne was soon obviously helpless and clueless with regard to the problems that the team had, but instead of sacking him at the end of the first half of the season, the board let him stay on for the first two matches of the second half as well, maybe because they thought that after beating Wuppertal in November things would get better, but I suspect that the actual reasons are Heyne’s merits with the club (having played as goalkeeper for more than 20 years and winning promotion to Regionalliga) and the fact that Heyne’s father had died only recently. Both factors are not actual reasons not to sack a manager, in fact this decision might be what cost us the league.
The next two matches were a disaster, points-wise: Magdeburg drew Werder Bremen U23 at home and lost to Energie Cottbus U23 away. Then Heyne was gone. I wonder if a prompter reaction by the board might have changed things, but it’s no use crying over spilt milk now.
Heyne’s reign ended with a terrible record: Of the 20 matches that the club played, they won merely 6, drew another 6 and lost 8. Only 1 away match was won and the goal record was equally abysmal: 19 goals, but 24 conceded.
As a successor, Magdeburg brought in Paul Linz, and finally the board signed players that could potentially help us: Tunisian forward Najeh Braham, Christian Reimann who came with the recommendation of 48 goals in 68 matches, albeit in tier IV, and Steffen Baumgart, an experienced former Bundesliga player and allrounder. In the test matches things looked good and a confident performance in the first match after the winter break spread a careful optimism, when Magdeburg beat Hamburger SV U23 2-0. But the away game at Dresden showed the old troubles again, the team looked scared, ran scared – and they played that way too, much to the chagrin of their manager. He had been trying to instill a hunger for attacking football into them, but that was not easy, after years of playing a 3-5-2 under Dirk Heyne, which most of the time turned into a 5-3-2 or rather 5-5-0.
The next home opposition was minnows Verl and Magdeburg fulfilled their task, beating them 2-0 again. But that was that. Curiously enough, Magdeburg began to win away games, even those that were highly unlikely, such as the ones in Düsseldorf or Berlin. However, this came at a price, as it seems, because since the Verl game, Magdeburg have not been able to win at home. None of these draws and even the loss against Essen on the penultimate matchday were of such a nature that you could have blamed the team. It’s just bad luck if you hit the bar twice in one game…it just wasn’t meant to be.
After yesterdays 2-1 away win at Wuppertal, the club were relegated on goal difference, showing that the management’s and the board’s failure to correctly identify weaknesses in the team was fatal in this season. However, in the new 18-team Regionalliga Nord, Magdeburg will have to try for immediate promotion. If they do not, they run the risk of losing much of their attendance (last season had the highest average attendance since 1983/84, with 11.800 spectators per game) and also their manager. Paul Linz’s contract runs out in June as the club did not qualify for the 3rd Liga. However, he is willing to stay if he gets a competitive team. The budget for next season is rumored to be 3 million euros. One should be able to do something with that.
Regionalliga Nord will start on August 16th, a lot of time to look for and sign new, talented and good players that can help put 1. FC Magdeburg back where they belong: Into a professional league.
