The 2010-11 season comes to a close next Saturday, and it looks very much like 1. FC Magdeburg will compete in the fourth tier for another year. What was a reason for dissatisfaction in the past two years, when Kiel and Babelsberg were promoted, is actually a source of relief. After a disastrous campaign, Magdeburg got very close to being relegated to the fifth tier. So close, in fact, as the club hadn’t been since 2002 when relegation was avoided only on matchday 33.
What had happened? After the club had tried very hard to win promotion in the past two seasons, a huge hole cropped up in the budget, and the board decided to a) lie about its existence and size, then b) admit its existence but lied about the size and then c) created a squad from scratch that was very very cheap, compared to the squads in the past two seasons. Unfortunately, along with being cheap, the team was also weak, aside from a few gifted players. Most of the team certainly had quality for a tier 5 team, but sadly, they had to compete in tier 4. At the start of the season, Magdeburg had lost two forwards who had scored 31 goals between them in the 2009-10 season. Of the team leaders in the past season, only two stayed, Daniel Bauer and Stephan Neumann. In any case, the club got off to a surprisingly good start, with 10 points from 4 matches, and then lost to RB Leipzig 1-2 after a good performance. Unfortunately, that would be the last time the team played well for quite a while – with dire consequences for their rank in the league table. After day 4, Magdeburg had led the league, but at the halfway point of the season – day 17 – they were ranked eleventh, with just four points separating the club from the relegation zone. In the winter break, forward Eddy Vorm left the club for Holland after he’d scored only once in the league, and forward Shergo Biran and midfielder Kosta Rodrigues were signed. The latter was not immediately helpful, while the former was banned from playing due to some transfer issues until March…
After matchday 24 saw the club slump to a 0-2 home defeat at the hands of Plauen, the board sacked manager Ruud Kaiser and brought in Wolfgang Sandhowe who was in charge of the reserve team at the time. The reserve was bottom of their league, too…
While Sandhowe did not at all improve the team’s playing style, Magdeburg did avoid relegation with him in charge. He did manage to get more points per game than Kaiser, but a difference of .18 is negligible at best.
The consequences of this season have already been drawn. Magdeburg will get a team manager who will be in charge of all the club’s teams. Hopefully this person will also understand that Sandhowe is not a long-term option, as his previous record with clubs is not exactly one of success. As there is an impending league reform next season, there will be no relegation from tier 4, making it an ideal season to form a new team to compete for promotion in 2013 – one of the famous two-year plans is in order, I’d say.
To sum up the various team’s performances:
One more thing: Next season, thing’s will be different at this here blog, although I don’t exactly know in which way. Different is all I can promise.

Am Montag schrieb ich einen Beitrag zu meiner Meinung nach missverständlichen Äußerungen des DFB-Sportdirektors Matthias Sammer. Gleichzeitig schrieb ich auch eine nur in Nuancen veränderte Mail an den DFB mit der Bitte um Klarstellung. Gestern abend erreichte mich nun die Antwort des DFB. Da ich bereits in der ersten Mail darauf hinwies, dass der Inhalt zeitgleich hier publiziert wird, veröffentliche ich jetzt auch mal die Antwort.
Sehr geehrter Herr Z.,
Sie interpretieren die Aussagen des DFB-Sportdirektors Matthias Sammer in diesem Zusammenhang falsch. Zudem ist es einer einzelnen Person gar nicht möglich, in dieser Art in das Lizenzierungsverfahren einzugreifen. Ihre Vorwürfe und Verdächtigungen sind aus der Luft gegriffen.
Interessanterweise erreichen uns häufig Beschwerden, dass sich Matthias Sammer zu wenig für den Fußball im Osten einsetzen würde.
Am Ende hat es eben doch jeder Verein erstmal selbst in der Hand…oder besser gesagt auf dem Fuß.

vielen Dank für die schnelle Beantwortung meiner Anfrage. Ich muss allerdings zunächst einmal klarstellen, dass es sich bei meiner Anfrage weder um einen Vorwurf noch um eine Verdächtigung handelte, sondern um die Bitte um eine Stellungnahme. Da Sie ja selbst schreiben, eine einzelne Person könne gar nicht „in dieser Art in das Lizenzierungsverfahren“ eingreifen, stellt sich mir allerdings weiterhin die Frage, worin die Hilfe von Matthias Sammer für Dynamo Dresden denn nun besteht, die er in dem von mir zitierten Beitrag meint.Konkret:
1. Was meint Matthias Sammer, wenn er sagt, er könne dem Verein Dynamo Dresden „nicht mehr“ helfen?
2. Hat Matthias Sammer dem Verein Dynamo Dresden in der Vergangenheit geholfen?
3. Wäre es nicht problematisch, wenn ein Mitglied der Sportlichen Leitung des nationalen Verbandes einem einzelnen Verein unter die Arme greift, obwohl die Aufgabe des nationalen Verbandes doch sicher die Förderung des Fußballsports in seiner Gesamtheit ist?Es ist in der Tat schade, dass Sie oftmals Beschwerden erreichen, Herr Sammer würde sich nicht genug für den Fußball im Osten einsetzen. Das ist, so wie ich das DFB-Organigramm verstehe, allerdings ja auch gar nicht seine Aufgabe, sondern wäre die Aufgabe des gesamten Deutschen Fußball-Bunds.
Mal sehen, was da jetzt kommt.

Sie sprechen in ihrem ersten Schreiben von einem „merkwürdigen Bild“. Deshalb haben wir von „Verdächtigungen“ gesprochen. Davon abgesehen geben wir gerne ein Statement ab – was wir ja auch in der vergangenen Mail getan haben.
Matthias Sammer hat u.a. das Sportgymnasium Dresden besucht. Anbei senden wir Ihnen eine Link über eine Ehrung, die Matthias Sammer als Repräsentant des DFB vorgenommen hat.
Dass jeder eine Biografie hat, so wie Sie auch Ihre Herkunft und Ihre Kultur haben, ist doch ganz normal. Und dass Matthias Sammer eben aus Dresden stammt, und dort in seinen Jahren beim DFB zwei oder maximal drei Termine gemacht hat, ist schlicht normal.
Ansonsten geben wir Ihnen in jedem Punkt recht – es geht um die Förderung des Fußballsportes insgesamt.

Am vergangenen Sonnabend strahlte der Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk in seiner Sendung Sport im Osten einen Beitrag aus, der sich mit der Frage des Sportdirektors bei Dynamo Dresden beschäftigte. Zu Wort kam auch der ehemalige Dynamo-Spieler Matthias Sammer, besser bekannt als DFB-Sportdirektor. Neben generellen Freundschaftsbezeugungen Richtung Ralf Minge (Ex-Sportdirektor bei Dynamo) fiel dabei auch ein Satz, der aufhorchen lässt:
Da kann ich auch mit einem bisschen Abstand dem Verein nicht mehr helfen.
Was meint Sammer damit? Zum Thema muss man wissen, dass der Verein Dynamo Dresden nicht erst in dieser Saison in die Schlagzeilen geriet, weil er angeblich kurz vor der Pleite stand. In der Saison 2006/07 war dies auch bereits der Fall. Dort gab Dynamo bekannt, dass sie nicht mehr liquide seien, just in dem Augenblick, als der Abriss und damit der Neubau des Stadions in Dresden begonnen hatte. Dieses Stadion ist ein städtisches Stadion, das die Stadt mit Dynamo Dresden als Hauptnutzer errichtet. Als der Verein nun vor der Pleite stand, gab es ein Darlehen der Stadt unter der Bedingung, ein Sanierungskonzept vorzulegen. Das ist bisher noch nicht geschehen.
Die Frage ist allerdings, wie ein Verein überhaupt in diese Schieflage kommen, und dennoch die Lizenzierungsverfahren erfolgreich abschließen konnte. Für 2006/07 hat der Verein einen Etat eingereicht, der nach den Worten des mittlerweile zurückgetretenen Aufsichtsratschefs Thomas Mulansky nicht vom Aufsichtsrat abgesegnet gewesen ist. In diesem Etat wurde unter anderem mit einem Zuschauerschnitt kalkuliert, der wegen des Stadionumbaus in Dresden gar nicht haltbar war. Kurz gesagt – die wirtschaftliche Leistungsfähigkeit des Vereins war nicht gegeben. Dynamo Dresden erhielt die Lizenz.
Für 2008/09 reichte der Verein wieder einen Etat ein und wieder erhielt er die Lizenz – um pünktlich zur Winterpause zu vermelden, dass man nicht mehr liquide sein. Dieses Mal sprang Kinowelt-Besitzer Michael Kölmel, durch großzügige Darlehen an mehrere Vereine (1. FC Union Berlin, Karlsruher SC, FC Sachsen Leipzig, 1. FC Magdeburg) schon bekannt, ein und half Dynamo mit einem Darlehen über die Runden. Als Gegenleistung erhielt er von Dresden die Rechte am Vereinslogo…
Noch hat Dynamo Dresden keine Lizenz für 2009/10 erteilt bekommen, aber das scheint nur eine Frage der Zeit.
Nimmt man nun die fragwürdigen Lizenzentscheidungen und setzt sie in Zusammenhang mit dem mdr-Beitrag, in dem unter anderem die Rede davon ist, Sammer habe „seine Hand schützend“ über den Verein gehalten, kombiniert mit Sammers eigener Aussage, er könne „dem Verein nicht mehr helfen“, so entsteht doch ein recht merkwürdiges Bild. Was genau meint der mdr, wenn er von der schützenden Hand spricht und was meint Sammer, wenn er sagt, er kann nicht mehr helfen? Und zu guter Letzt: Warum fragte der mdr nicht gleich nach?

After last week’s look at bigger things, now a look at a smaller idiocy on part of the DFB (German FA).
Last weekend, winter came to Germany. Sort of. There was not a lot of snow, but it was enough to see quite an impressive number of games cancelled in the Regionalliga Nord. Among the games cancelled was Magdeburg’s match in Hamburg’s Stadion Hoheluft against Altonaer FC von 1893.
Altona had been looking forward to the match, because it promised to boost their attendance that was stuck at a meagre 1,107 spectators on average. As 1. FC Magdeburg have the reputation of bringing a considerable contingent of travelling fans, there was much rejoicing in Altona. Then, however, the snow came and the game was cancelled.
In its infinite wisdom, the German FA have since decided to fix December 3, a Wednesday, as the new date. This alone was sufficient to reduce the travelling contingent, as it s a regular working day. But the FA have gone a step further. As Hoheluft does not possess floodlights – or rather, as the DFB consider them inadequate, kick-off time has been fixed at 2pm. That is 2 o’clock in the afternoon, or 1400 hrs. Obviously, this move largely eliminates any chances for a large attendance.
Neither club had desired to play at this date or at this time, but the DFB fixed the date anyway. I think the general opinion is a nice sarcastic „thank you very much“.
The week before, Magdeburg beat Energie Cottbus II with a 3-1 scoreline and moved within one point of league leaders Kiel.
I just want you to think what I want you to think.
To many football fans in the UK, Germany has attained a status of promised land in the past few years. Standing area in the stadia, alcohol in the stadia – and a FTA highlights show showing all goals and quite a bit more from Bundesliga matches, a mere 75 minutes after the final whistle (at least on Saturdays, it’s a bit more for Friday and Sunday matches). Add to that that there are only three different kick-off times in the Bundesliga, and you can see quite easily how fan-friendly Germany is in comparison.
But things are about to change. The current TV deal runs out at the end of the season and for the new deal, this paradisaical state will change. But as the German Football Association (DFB) tried to make a better deal for pay TV channels by delaying the FTA highlights show, the German competition regulators stated that they would not accept the deal. And now the interesting part begins. In a panel discussion in the German city of Gießen, FA president Theo Zwanziger was faced with an audience that was opposed to the disentangling of the matchdays in relation to the new TV deal. When the moderator repeatedly asked what the consequences of the planned fragmentation of kick-off times in the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga starting with the 2009-10 season would be, particularly with regard to the non-professional leagues, Mr Zwanziger called this line of questioning „demagogic“.
Again, this is not really that interesting, if you gloss over the fact that a representative of Germany’s largest sports association vilifies the process of asking an audience for their opinion. It becomes interesting in a jiffy, if you consider a press release that went out on 14 November 2008, wherein the German FA „condemns the defamation of Dr. Theo Zwanziger“. This defamation, according to the DFB, consists of German journalist and blogger Jens Weinreich calling Mr Zwanziger an „incredible demagogue“ in the comments (#4) of a blog entry at German football blog Direkter Freistoß. His reasoning was that Mr Zwanziger at a congress of the German Olympics Sports Confederation (DOSB) claimed repeatedly that the cause of the difficulties of German football, the German Football League and the German FA was the Bosman ruling of 1995. Mr Zwanziger repeatedly demanded special treatment for the sports world in the context of European law, both regarding employment and financial law. Mr Zwanziger also stated that „if you are not in command of the communication, you will always lose“ – meaning that the DFB needs to control the discourse over the changes made to football these days.
While Mr Weinreich was in Beijing, working at the Olympic Games, he received a fax from the DFB, claiming that referring to Mr Zwanziger as an „incredible demagogue“ was libel and slander and that Mr Zwanziger had always „fought for the exact opposite“ – against what German law calls „Volksverhetzung“ (closely related to the concept of Incitement to racial or ethnic hatred). Indeed, here is the actual issue. As the term demagogue has several meanings in Germany, one of which being closely related to the Third Reich and its leadership, it must always be made clear from the context what meaning is the one alluded to when using this term. Mr Weinreich holds that he clearly did not intend for the term „demagogue“ to put Mr Zwanziger into any sort of commonality with the Third Reich leadership. And two courts of law have since agreed that Mr Zwanziger is not correct in his assumption that using the term demagogue exclusively refers to those people who commit the crime of Volksverhetzung, but that it has a more diverse meaning.
These rulings notwithstanding, Mr Zwanziger announced he would file suit at the Landgericht Koblenz – unless Mr Weinreich explicitly stated that by referring to Mr Zwanziger as an „incredible demagogue“ he did not intend to imply that Mr Zwanziger was a „Volksverhetzer“. Naturally, Mr Weinreich let expire the deadline set for this declaration, and his lawyers sent a letter expressing their perplexity at the insistence of Mr Zwanziger’s lawyers to sue, their understanding of the term in question and thirdly their choice of legal venue, indicating that they hoped this choice was not mandated by Mr Zwanziger having been judge at this particular court and still having contacts with the personnel there.
This last exchange took place on 12 November 2008. No suit was filed, instead, the DFB sent out an email to more than 100 decision-makers in politics and sports, attaching the aforementioned press release and claiming that „we can no longer accept that persons of the public life are defamed without reason on more or less anonymous internet blogs“. The mail continues stating that „we are convinced that we have to promote this basic position offensively“. The mail closes with the expression of hope that this press release would be used in arguing and reporting the case.
Mr Weinreich has identified 18 lies (he refers to them as „Lügenkomplexe“, literally lie complexes) in this press release. The most important omission in this press release is the fact that two courts have disagreed with the DFB. The press release also refers to „more or less anonymous“ internet blogs, despite fact that neither the initial comment, nor the blog where the comment appeared are anywhere near anonymous. To claim that Mr Weinreich’s eponymous blog is anonymous is equally absurd. To call a statement in the comments section of one blog and documenting what resulted from it (i.e. documenting the exchanges between the lawyers etc.) a „campaign“ is also rather far-fetched.
One of the more interesting assertions in the press release is the statement that Mr Weinreich has retracted the defamation within the time limit set to him by Mr Zwanziger’s lawyers. Mr Weinreich writes in his blog that the statement has not been retracted, will not be retracted and that it needs not be retracted as per the decision of two courts of law. The DFB uses the press release to also criticize the reporting of the Gießener Anzeiger, deploring an attempt to discredit Mr Zwanziger – despite the fact that a number of witnesses can confirm that Mr Zwanziger used the terminology as described in the article. The other points that Mr Weinreich lists are equally untrue, but less blatant. He concludes his entry with the following statement.
„The truth is: I have characterized the president of the DFB as a demagogue, I have justified this, but I have not defamed him.
The truth is: Two courts agree.“

Regarding the conduct of Mr Zwanziger and the DFB, the question that has to be asked is: What do you call knowingly putting out a press release that contains no less than 18 untrue statements and is designed to harm the reputation and earnings of another person?
I think I know what the answer is.
